Moonshine…the Good Kind

At twilight I went out to the barn to close in my chickens for the night. In the southern sapphire sky I saw beautiful, bright white thunderheads building. Shining between two of these great clouds was the moon in its first quarter. I’ve always been mesmerized by the moon. Its silver light pours into my bedroom window through lace curtains and pools on the floor and on my bed. When it shines on my face, I close my eyes and imagine it’s God’s caress. Many years ago I had a revelation that I’m sure has been made before by countless theologians and poets much smarter than I: the moon reflects the sun’s light just as we are to reflect the Son’s light. Like the moon, we can’t generate light on our own. We are made to reflect light, the Savior’s light. Now what do we do with all this light bouncing off of us? Let it shine!

Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put in under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Our lights shine when we put others ahead of ourselves, when we share what we have, when we demonstrate by our actions what Jesus Christ is like. Go out and let that light shine!!
