By Day and By Night

Last night a quartet of rugged outdoorsmen set up camp in a little clearing in the woods beyond the bottom hay field.  The Cowboy and I decided to pay them a visit after dark.  As he steered the gator on the bending path, The Cowboy pointed skyward to the star-filled night, the bright moon and a white plume of smoke rising from a campfire.  We motored on ahead and joined the campers as they roasted deer meat over the fire and made their preparations for tomorrow's breakfast.  Their horses, tied to a make-shift hitching post, nickered contently and the dogs tromped over a carpet of dried leaves -- truly a relaxing visit.

Today as I gaze across the pond I am awestruck by a grove of maple trees.  The sun brightens their orange and yellow foliage, and they take on the appearance of fire with tongues licking the blue sky above.  Even more awesome than this view is overwhelming presence of God.  I am reminded of Moses and the Israelites wandering in the desert with God's presence all around them:

By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light so that they could travel by day or night.  Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar or fire by night left its place in front of the people.  Exodus 13:21,22

The Lord is present all around me, too.  All I have to do is open my eyes, acknowledge Him and he will guide me by day or night.
